Cataclysm Preview for Shamans

Now that Cataclysm has launched, all of the classes have some major changes to look forward to. Here is a look at all the things that Shamans can look forward to. However keep in mind that World of Warcraft is continually evolving, so Blizzard may continue to make changes as the kinks of the expansion get worked out.

New spells to look forward to

Leveling up to level 85 means that higher level Shamans will get some new spells to play with.

• Level 81: Unleash Weapon. This spell will unleash the power of any weapon enchants you may have. If your Shaman is able do dual-wield, then you will be able to activate the enchants on both of your weapons. For example, if you have Windfury on your weapon you will be able to hurl a version of your weapon at your target, doing further damage and increasing your Haste. Flametongue will allow you to do extra fire damage. Earthliving will heal your target and give you buffs towards your next healing spell.

• Level 83: Healing Rain. This is a healing over time spell that will cast down a healing rain to a selected area. Any number of players can be affected with this spell; however the more players that you are trying to heal the less healing any individual character will receive. This spell will help Restoration Shamans be more effective at group-healing as well as give them some more healing over time capabilities.

• Level 85: Spiritwalker’s Grace. This will be a self-target buff that will allow you to cast even while moving. Depending on your Shaman’s spec this will allow you to do more damage or more healing in situations where you are required to move. The spell will be instant cast but will have a 2 minute cooldown, so Shamans will need to plan out when the best time to cast the spell will be.

Players that have played Shamans before will also see some new spells added to the lower levels. At level 3 Shamans will be able to learn Primal Strike, a weapon-based attack. Blizzard’s goal with this spell is to make all Shaman specs viable for leveling. At level 4 Shamans will learn Healing Wave. This new spell will replace the previous Healing Wave spell, which has been renamed Greater Healing Wave. The new Healing Wave will be the basic healing spell for Shamans, while the Lesser and Greater versions will be used only as the situation calls for them.

New abilities and other changes

Every patch and every expansion gives Blizzard a chance to tweak classes and races so that they are balanced and true to the original content. Sometimes this means that a class gets “nerfed” or other times they may see a boost in their abilities.

Restoration Shamans, as well as other healers, will have to start paying closer attention to the amount of mana that they have available. Spirit will be the main stat for mana-regeneration, and spells have been tweaked so that healers will no longer be able to spam their strongest heal but will rather need to learn what heals to use in what scenario.

Shamans will no longer be able to remove poisons. The Cleanse Spirit ability will remove curses, and Restoration Shamans will be able to use their talent points to adjust the ability so that it also works on magic.

The Cleansing Totem has been removed so that players will now have to decide whether or not it is worth the mana to dispel something. Dispels for all players will now cost more mana than before so that players will have to decide whether the cost is worth the benefits earned by dispelling the debuff.

Flametongue Totem is being replaced by Totem of Wrath, giving all Fire Totems a spell power boost. However, the buffs earned by Fire Elemental Totems will not stack with Demonic Pact given by Warlocks, so players will need to decide what buffs are the most beneficial for their given scenario.

Enhancement Shamans should see different global cooldowns than before. This should make the spec more interesting to play and will allow players to play around with their spell rotations to find out what works best for their playing style.

Talent Changes

Some of the most interesting things for Shamans to look forward to with the arrival of Cataclysm are a redesigning of the Talent Trees. Talent Trees are now shorter and more intense, with players being able to see the benefits of choosing a specific spec very early on.

Shamans will see that Elemental Reach is now simplified so that they have a consistent spell range.

Elemental Shamans will receive Earthquake as a talent, allowing them to have targeted Area of Effect spell capabilities. They will also have a talent that allows Spirit to boost their Hit rating as well as their mana regeneration, allowing them to share gear with Restoration Shamans.

Restoration Shamans will likely see Spirit Link appearing back into their talent trees. This spell will allow the Restoration Shaman to link targets so that they would share damage.

The talent Ancestral Knowledge will boost the size of a Shaman’s mana pool instead of their intellect.

The Talent Enhancing Totems has been replaced by Focused Strikes. Focused Strikes will improve the damage of the spells Stormstrike and Primal Strike.

Many of the passive bonus talents have been removed and redone with the new Mastery system. This will allow Shamans to spend their talent points on Talents that will give them more active abilities.

Mastery

One of the most exciting changes to the Shaman Talent Trees is the installation of Mastery Passive Talent bonuses. Each spec receives additional bonuses as well as a Mastery spell that helps the Shaman truly identify with the spec he has chosen.

• Elemental Shamans will see bonuses to Spell Damage and Spell Crit. Their Mastery spell is Elemental Overload. This spell would allow direct-damage spells to proc a bonus version of the spell similar to how Lightning Overload worked prior to the expansion.

• Enhancement Shamans will see bonuses to Melee Damage and Melee Haste. Their Mastery Spell is Nature Damage, which will give them a passive bonus to all of the Nature Damage spells.

Restoration Shamans will see bonuses to Healing and Meditation. Their Mastery spell is Deep Healing. Deep Healing allows the Restoration Shaman to do more healing to targets with lower health. Healing will be scaled to damage instead of having arbitrary break points, meaning that healing amounts will be directly affected by a target’s current health.

Shaman Patch 4.0.1 – Shaman PvP Guide

Players are numbed by the recent changes.The first change you’ll notice is to level 80 World of Warcraft Shaman players who were accumulating Emblems/Honor Points;  the whole currency system has been affected.

Changes To Expect With Patch 4.0.1;

Patch 4.0.1 changes affect everyone so Shaman PvP Guide will first deal with Shaman ‘PvE’ Currency.

If you are a player who’s been doing instances for emblems, you’ll be alarmed to see all of your emblems replaced.

Patch 4.0.1 converts your old currency to the new one.

Shaman PvP Guide To changes;

1. Emblems/Badges for gold.
2. Emblems of Frost for Justice Points.
3. Emblems of Triumph for Justice Points.
4. Heroism, Conquest and Valor Emblems are 5.5 gold.
5. Badges of Justice are 1.833 gold each.

If you want to do your own calculations then add up your Emblems of Triumph and Emblems of Frost and multiply that number by 11.58.

Dungeons and Raids now give out gold or new Justice Points. Dungeons or Raids that gave away Badges or lower Emblems before, will give extra gold. The higher instances will give Justice Points.  Frustrating if you were after marks for something specific.

Vendors have already switched to Justice Points.  Everything costs Justice Points now.

Shaman PvP Guide To PvP Currency in Patch 4.0.1

For World of Warcraft Shaman players after PvP points, you’ll see a major change in currency.

All of the previous Arena Points, Honor Points, Marks of Honor, Stone Keeper’s Shards, Spirit Shards, and Venture Coins have been converted to the new system.

Patch 4.0.1 Conversion Breakdown;

• Old Arena Points 0.85 Honor Points.
• Old Honor Points 0.024 Honor Points.
• Wintergrasp Marks of Honor 19.08 Honor Points.
• Venture Coin 3 Honor Points.
• Battleground Mark of Honor 2.976 Honor Points.
• Stone Keeper’s Shard 1.6 Honor Points.
• Spirit Shard 1 Honor Point.

Let’s move on, Honor Points are given instead of Marks/Shards for all PvP play besides the Arena that is. Arena Points will
be given to Arena Players. After the launch of Cataclysm, Arena and the highest Battleground season players get Conquest
Points.

Shaman PvP Guide – New Caps;

There’s a soft cap on conversions the same as before, set at 4,000, so if your World of Warcraft Shaman character converts higher, you won’t earn any more points until they have been spent.

Also don’t delay if there is something you’d like to buy use those points up,  a coming patch, which is due before Cataclysm is to hard cap the conversions, anything left over is changed up to gold.

Shaman PvP Guide – Exchange Rate;

1. 35.0 silver per Honor point.
2. 47.5 silver per Justice Point.

This conversion is for anything over the soft cap of 4,000.

The gold’s great but I suggest you get any new gear for future quests ‘now’.

Mastery Rating With Patch 4.0.1 Shaman

Patch 4.0.1 brings the addition of Mastery Rating, one of the new stat changes with patch 4.0.1, a stat that can be found on the higher level gear.  This stat helps you to increase the benefit of your Mastery, a new talent specialization that can be learned from a trainer once you hit level 80.

Each class has an option of three different Mastery options, which are dependent on the spec that you have chosen.  Although there is no known Mastery cap yet, it is important to remember to balance this stat with your others to be able to play your character successfully. Mastery Rating is important to keep your Mastery going.

Shaman

• • Elemental Shamans earn the spell Elemental Overload.  This means that with each attack you have a chance for Elemental Overload to occur, starting at 16% and increasing by 2% for each Mastery point.  The Elemental Overload will cause Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, or Lava Burst to trigger a second, similar spell on the same target.  This second spell will be at no additional cost to the Shaman and will generate no additional treat and will also do 75% of its normal damage.
  • Enhancement Shamans will earn the spell Enhanced Elements.  This spell increases the damage done by Fire, Frost, and Nature spells, starting at 20% and increasing by 2.5% for each Mastery point.
  • Restoration Shamans will earn the spell Deep Healing.  This spell will increase direct healing spell potency.  The amount starts at up to 20% and increases by 2.5% for each point of Mastery, and is based on the current health level of the target.  Targets at lower health levels will see a higher healing bonus than targets with higher health levels

Remember that it is important to choose your character’s spec based on your playing style preferences, not necessarily the Mastery spell that will become available to you.  With all of the new changes to talent trees and Mastery Blizzard is making it easier to personalize your character for any situation and with the help of Mastery Rating your Mastery benefits will increase.

• Since you wear heavier armor than a Priest or a Druid you will be expected to hold your own, but at the same time if you signed on to be the healer of your Arena team you’d better be good at keeping other players alive.
• For this everything comes down to gear.
• As a Resto Shaman gear guide you will need to think about the types of PvP fights that you will be enduring.
• You essentially have two sets of gear to consider:
• Crit.
• And MP5.

• Keep in mind that to make Enhancement Shaman PvP reliable you will need good gear.

• Many players will not spec all the way down to Feral Spirit.
• This leaves them more points to put into the Resto or Elemental to create a hybrid spec.

If you’re thinking of running a PvP Shaman I’d like to give you a little heads up on the use of Totems.

• They’re an instrument of war.
• They’re unique to the Shaman.
• They’re the first tool and weapon of a Shaman.
  

In the hands of a Shaman Totems are not only destructive, they can be a life saver for your allies.

The Totems signify Shaman’s power and control of the elements.

A Shaman will obtain Totems by succesfully finishing certain quests.

Shaman PvP Guide – The four elements.

1. Earth.
2. Wind (air).
3. Fire.
4. And Water.

One Totem from each element can be put into action at any given time.

A Totem must be left once it is placed, that’s unless you are replacing it with a new one.

A spell can be cast for each Totem when they are placed, so you can have four spells running at once.

It’s impossible to have two or more spells running on the same Totem at once because you’ll find one cancels out the other.

The effect is only within a certain distance, so beware not to stray too far.

I’ll get straight down to it okay, if you’ve tried out the new ‘Looking For Group’ system that allows you to PUG instances with players from your same battle group, then you may have noticed something;

More often than not if you are waiting for a team member to be added in, you are waiting on either a healer or a tank.

Now, take a moment to think about your average PvP encounter in the battlegrounds, healers are one of the top commodities!

It used to be that many PvP Shamans shied away from healing in the battlegrounds.

Shaman PvP Guide – Top Three Reasons

1. A healer has fewer defenses than a DPS target.
2. Too often they get singled out by members of the opposing team.
3. Plus, since their offensive spells weren’t as great, leveling a healer used to be a slow and thankless job.

However, as any good Shaman PvP Guide will tell you, thanks to the addition of dual spec, which allows you to create two separate Shaman PvP talent trees, you can now be a Resto PvP Shaman and swap out to DPS when questing.

  Whether you are protecting a resource in Arathi Basin, guarding the flag in Warsong, or a similar PvP scenario where you need to play defense, a healer is a great position to play.

  Besides the ability to stay alive longer, because you know half of your team is going to buck the rules and go looking for more honor points, leaving you alone in the flag room, you can also keep your teammates alive.

  When it comes down to a fair fight, he with the most health points wins.

   

• Capturing the flag.

  PvP Shamans rule when it comes to capturing the flag in Warsong.

  You’ve got a little bit of everything;

   

  1. Good armor to let you take a hit.
  2. Ghost Wolf which allows you to scoot away faster.
  3. Healing spells to prevent yourself from dying halfway back to base.
  4. And totems like your Earthbind totem that can slow the enemy down.

  Why wouldn’t you want to play a Resto PvP Shaman?

• Arena.

  When it comes to arena PvP play, the best team wins.

  This means the Shaman with the best PvP armor, PvP skills, and PvP strategy is likely to come out on top.

  However, heals play a crucial role when it comes to facing off another team.

  If you have a solid healer (who can also manage to throw in some DPS now and again) and they don’t, who do you think will come out on top?

Shaman PvP Guide – PvP stats

First of all, your two most important stats as a PvP Shaman will be stamina and agility.

1. Stamina.

   Stamina gives you more hit points, and the more hit points you have the longer you will stay alive.

   This is particularly important for Shamans who decide to dual wield or use a two-handed weapon, as they will lose the benefit of carrying a shield.

2. The other important Shaman PvP stat is agility.

   For every point of agility you have you will receive two points of armor, as well as increased critical strike chances and better dodge ratings.

   Again, these are particularly useful for PvP Shamans that choose not to carry a shield.

Intellect and spirit are good for mana and health regeneration, but you can also drop down a totem if needed since the fights are so short.

Shaman PvP Guide – PvP weapons

A main consideration in PvP fights is your weapon.

Shaman PvP weapons can be just about anything that allows you to hit hard and fast.

If you are going to mainly heal during PvP fights, a good two-handed weapon with the appropriate stats will be sufficient.

However, since many PvP Shamans prefer to fight, you will likely want to ditch the two-handed weapon for either dual wield ability that allows you to hit harder or to carry a shield to give yourself more protection.

I can not tell you how excited I was to find out they were going to allow the Alliance to play Shamans with the Burning Crusade expansion.

I’ve always loved the battlegrounds, and Shamans were the bane of my existence, (especially the Taurens), who seemed darn near impossible to kill! I was looking forward to giving as good as I was getting.

Shamans In Deadmines

Of course, Shaman leveling was a tedious affair. Tell me, is there anyone with a level 80 that enjoys running Deadmines anymore?

Either you are burned out on it from running low level guildies through as a level 80 or you hit it a dozen times in your 20s hoping to get Cruel Barb, either way it’s not much fun at all.

But at least that gave me an instant Shaman guide for how to play my character.

Best Guide to PVP – A Different Game

Many of the ones I found originally, limited themselves to one set of the Shaman talents, such as an Enhancement Shaman PvP guide or a Resto Shaman PvP guide.

While useful, who on earth wants to spend the time reading through three different guides and trying to figure out what playing style is right for them?

The best guide that I found was the PVP Bible. This guide did not contain a leveling guide or a gold making guide.

And because I didn’t really need this sort of information, since I now had two level 80s it worked out just perfect for me.

The information within is up to date and even includes stuff from Wrath of the Lich King, so even a lower level alt might find it useful.

The PVP Bible

The best thing about the PvP Bible is that it really breaks everything down for me. It talks about all the various Shaman PvP builds and the strategies that go along with them.

Each battle is broken down depending on who you are fighting against, so when it comes to one on one combat I’m nearly always unstoppable. Of course, if you get mobbed by 5 Horde players tactics go out of the window, but I just hope I have enough team mates nearby that it won’t be an issue.

Another great thing is that the PVP Bible looks at Shaman macros and Shaman mods that are specifically geared towards PvP play.

I’ve always liked mods, they make playing so much easier, but there are so many out there that it is good to have a third party opinion on which ones are actually useful.

It may still be a little while before I’ll feel like I’m dominating the battlefield like the Tauren Shamans used to, but I’m definitely a lot closer than I was before.
